Victor Vasarely

Victor Vasarely was a Hungarian-born French visual artist. Having achieved international fame during his own lifetime, his most distinguished contribution was his creation of a new artistic trend: "Optical art". By devoting a major exhibition ("The Responsive Eye") to the latter movement at New York's MoMA in 1965, Americans paved the way for worldwide recognition of his work and its widespread circulation by popularizing his technique under the name "Op art". From the earliest development of his graphic studies in the early 1930's to his decision to promote a social art form accessible to all from the 1960's, he worked with a consistently identifiable palette of colors and forms.
