Description

This book is the result of the cross-residencies of a French illustrator (Benoît Guillaume) in Algiers and an Algerian illustrator (Nawel Louerrad) in Marseille. It presents subjective drawings of the two great cities facing each other on either side of the Mediterranean. For Benoît Guillaume, it all begins with the metaphor of the city offered to him by an Algerian in the form of an onion: a city with many facets, difficult for a foreigner to grasp.

Intrigued, a little lost, Benoît decides to go deep into the mythical Kasbah to unravel its mystery, but his determination is opposed by opaque walls, impassable barriers. He then turns to the inhabitants, who become his only means of understanding the city, as well as to the colonial past of the city, meeting, at the bend of an alley, one or other colonist sitting in a café, testimonies of an era that is not so long gone.

Nawel Louerrad shares her equally enriching experience on the other side of the Mediterranean.
