Values and materiality

"Based on field surveys conducted on all continents, this collective book develops a common reflection within the framework of the musée du quai Branly, opening it to other spaces in which things are preserved and exhibited with different values. The materialities analyzed in these studies can be used in the making of ceremonial objects (houses, ornaments, statues), result from organic degradation (human or bird remains), or appear in technological infrastructures (cinema screenings). By inscribing them in cultural biographies in the course of which values are transformed, the study of these materialities makes it possible to follow the genesis of values that their exhibition in a museum can make us see as contradictory. By looking back at their provenance, it draws possible futures for them."
