Down jacket, Moon Boot, red sweater and jacquard sweater, spindle, polar fur and furry boots... Alpine hunter's uniform, ski instructor's outfit, snowboarder's look... So many elements of the mountain leisure wardrobe have become as much a part of our imagination as our wardrobe! How did clothing designed for the snow and the peaks come into being? How did their appearance, manufacture and codes evolve? At the end of the 19th century, propriety dictated the dress code more than comfort and protection from the elements. And mountain sports could not be practiced without elegance. Long white jackets for women and brightly-colored paletots for men. Over time, with the democratization of mountain tourism and the industrialization of the clothing industry, inventiveness led people to stop dressing and start equipping themselves. Then, as sportswear became warm, technical, lightweight and high-performance, aesthetics and fashion took over. The lines and materials born on the slopes have conquered everyday urban life, and can even be seen on designer catwalks. Moncler, Fusalp and Vuarnet have set up shop on rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré, in the Marais or in Japan. Rossignol Apparel takes part in Milan Fashion Week and promotes "mountain chic". Jean-Charles de Castelbajac "dresses" cable cars, Chanel stamps skis and squares.
