Description

"It is by considering India as an imaginary country that we come closest to reality", said the philosopher Jean Grenier. If ever there was a travelogue that fulfilled these requirements to perfection, it is India (without the English), a text brimming with colour, contrast and fragrance, as well as mysticism and terrifying descriptions of misery. Published in 1903 by Calmann-Lévy, after large extracts had been published in La Revue des deux mondes, this journey, which Loti began at the end of 1899, is presented to us in a form that shows little respect for chronology, but does orient it definitively towards a religious quest. L'Inde (sans les Anglais) is preceded by Mahé des Indes, Loti's first contact with the country.
