Description

For his final lecture at the Collège de France, Philippe Sansonetti invites us to reflect on the way we look at microbes and infectious diseases. While it is highly unlikely that we will ever achieve a world without microbes, we are making great strides towards a world depleted of microbes, which will have significant consequences. While the "pessimistic" scenario - i.e. the total collapse of plant and animal life (we would then find ourselves in a situation similar to the disappearance of Mesopotamia due to soil exhaustion) - can undoubtedly be avoided, the "optimistic" scenario is that of a massive, hardly reversible impoverishment in the richness and diversity of living species.
