Intended for the general public, this book is not a popularization exercise, but a collection of short stories illustrating the various aspects of smallpox, here called Alastrim, the disease responsible for the death of the largest number of human beings in history. As this infection is pandemic, these stories take place in different countries and at different times. The virus responsible, called Pox, is described, along with two related viruses, those responsible for cow and monkey disease.
