Description
Histoires d'un chef-d'oeuvre parisien, edited by Valérie Guillaume Véronique Milande Emmanuelle Philippe Sophie Picot-Bocquillon Juliette Tanré-Szewczyk
The architectural history of the Fountain of the Innocents is closely linked to that of Parisian urban planning and its evolution over the centuries. In the Middle Ages, one of the first public fountains in Paris was offered to the inhabitants of the district surrounding the Saints-Innocents church.
In 1549, it was replaced by a new monument unveiled for Henri II's royal entry into Paris, decorated with reliefs by Jean Goujon and conceived as an ode to water in all its forms. The fountain was immediately recognized as a Renaissance masterpiece and an exceptional milestone in French art history. Over the centuries, it has continued to inspire artists. Ingres, Barye, Carpeaux, Doisneau, Atget and Cartier-Bresson have all drawn from the source.
