Taking as his starting point the mythical figure of the mermaid, who pervades the imaginations of all civilisations, Sylvain Pattieu conjures up the great historical legends with precision and humour, making them resonate with today's world. Between moving memories of his mother, reflections on the fate of the Inuit people and contemporary epics, he sheds light on trajectories that are often invisible and questions our relationship with history, art, transmission, different cultures and powerful women to expand our imaginations and give life to a true mythology of the present. After all, don't we have more in common with mermaids than we think?
Mermaids are everywhere in the world. Mermaids are commonplace. It's not just Ariel, Walt Disney's Little Mermaid. There's Mami Wata in West Africa, Yemoja in Nigeria, jiaorens in China, lobastas in Slavic countries, Iara in Brazil, LaSiren in Haiti, La Pincoya in Chile. [...] Mermaids are everywhere. And in the Inuit lands of the Far North, there's Sedna.
