Description

Blue Nude IV, made in 1952 in the studio of Regina is part of a set of four compositions in gouache cut, the series of Blue Nudes. Compared to the other three, Blue Nude IV is worked on over time, whereas Blue Nudes I, II and III are executed in a single stroke of the chisel. It is therefore the matrix of the others, and bears the trace of the multiple pencil strokes and adjustments of the pieces of blue gouache. Although Matisse did not express a particular preference for any one color in his palette, blue nonetheless took a privileged place in his work. During the last years of his life, he used a blue of a particular texture to obtain, by flat tints, a luminous matter. The intense blue of the cut paper is not there to symbolize the color of the seas but simply because Henri Matisse, after long experimental research, has recognized this blue a virtue of fixing gradually generating light and color. The intensity of this unique blue calls out to the viewer, like a gong interrupts an action and attracts attention, to lead him towards a new vision and new balances. In the Blue Nude IV, the voids that separate the flat blue areas highlight the model's pose. Through this discontinuity in the representation of the limbs, he creates a new harmony in which the emptiness of the white of the sheet contributes to the unity of the pose.
