Histoire du Salon de peinture
Jean-Baptiste Greuze - Childhood Illuminated
Description
Following the example of the first Italian academies, the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, founded in 1648, quickly established a regular exhibition. Open to the public from the early 18th century, this Salon quickly became the meeting place for the art world and one of the major events in Parisian life.
Its history provides an insight into the evolution of artistic trends, the formation of public taste, and the creation and development of art criticism. Successive revolts by the most innovative artists against the Salon jury led to its demise in 1881. Independent Salons then began to emerge.
Ultimately, recounting the eventful history of the Salon allows us to observe the history of the visual arts in France over more than two centuries and to understand the customs of the art world and the evolution of taste.
