The Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris retains a collection of 130 European tapestries dating from 1400 to 1600. This book publishes in their entirety, both masterpieces and fragments, accompanied by photographs and detailed texts.
This set is a reference collection that even global experts in this field do not know in their entirety. These tapestries are
very varied, uneven quality, more or less restored, but the variety of workshops (France, South Netherlands, Italy, Germany) make it unavoidable and of great interest.

Description

The diversity of themes leads the reader to delve into the history of beliefs, Christian, Roman and mythological; Each tapestry describes an event whose story, most often mixed with symbolism and allegorical figures, is analyzed. Where possible, the engraved model used as a source for the tapestry is reproduced opposite. A photographic campaign was made especially for this book, allowing to (re) discover these often superb pieces. The model
privileges full pages and details, inviting the reader to enter this fascinating world.
This catalog, "reasoned" in the sense that the entire collection is included, is a continuation of those published in Glasgow (Burrell Collection, 2017), the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, 2004) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art ( New York, 1993), prestigious collections with which the Museum of Decorative Arts shares pieces of the same curtain or panels very close, out of the same workshops.
