"We know nothing about childhood: the more false ideas we have about it, the further we stray. The wisest people focus on what is important for adults to know, without considering what children are capable of learning. They always look for the adult in the child, without thinking about what the child is before becoming an adult. This is the study to which I have devoted myself most, so that even if my entire method were fanciful and false, my observations could still be useful. I may have been very wrong about what needs to be done, but I believe I have understood the subject on which we must work. So begin by studying your pupils better, for you certainly do not know them. Now, if you read this book with that in mind, I do not believe it will be of no use to you.
