Hervé Di Rosa au Mucem. Un air de famille

9782359064643

In bookshops on 15 May 2025.

- The book is published to coincide with the exhibition at the Mucem in Marseilles, from 12 March to 1 September 2025.
- Hervé Di Rosa has specially designed the book's cover and created some of the works presented for the exhibition, which are therefore previously unpublished.
- Artistic director Jean Seisser, a long-time partner of Hervé Di Rosa, has conceived the exhibition as an archipelago made up of fifteen or so islets. Each of these islands brings together some of the objects in the Mucem collections and one of the artist's creations. Each island tells its own story, freely interpretable by the visitor.

Description

With total freedom, Hervé Di Rosa has chosen works from the Mucem's collections that appeal to his sensibility, and has created a complementary piece around each of them. Just as a ring is designed for a diamond, so a reliquary is built to highlight something sacred. The artist felt that there was a family resemblance between his works and the popular art objects at the Mucem.

Three sculpted panels by Hervé Di Rosa, made on the high plateaux of Amadoua in the Noun region, stand side by side with a fish-shaped merry-go-round. Here, a ladder made from ox yokes collected in the regions of France by the museum's ethnographers seems to give wings to a resin cow painted by Hervé Di Rosa. Here, a long hunting rifle, once used for waterfowl, is displayed among a myriad of wooden birds carved years ago by Marius Di Rosa, the artist's father.

Curious about everything and driven by a strong desire to travel the world, Hervé Di Rosa has always worked with local craftsmen wherever he has settled. Those who, throughout the world, know how to update their skills with each new generation, to create works for the places where they are born and the people who live there.
