Description

The early 20th century marked the introduction of African and Oceanic art to Paris. Long ignored and viewed as ethnographic objects, these creations are now regarded, exhibited and collected as works of art. Between 1913 and 1923, artists, writers, dealers and curators, including Guillaume Apollinaire, Joseph Brummer, Charles Vignier, Paul Guillaume, André Level and Henri Clouzot, participated in this recognition and contributed to the emergence of a previously unknown area of the art market. Marked by four seminal exhibitions, including the one at the Pavillon de Marsan in the Louvre, this decade paved the way for a new perspective.
