Description
It is in the heart of Paris, under the dome of the Hôtel des Invalides, that the Emperor Napoleon I rests. His tomb is carved in a quartzite evoking by its purple color the porphyry traditionally associated with the emperors. Work of Louis Visconti (1842-1853), it takes the form of an antique sarcophagus. The impression of power and sobriety resuscitates the spirit of the Empire style. It was in 1840 that the Emperor's ashes were returned to France, thus complying with his last wishes: "I want my ashes to rest on the banks of the Seine, in the midst of the French people that I have loved so much."
